How to pay your federal estimated tax (IRS)
Your next federal estimated payment may be due soon. Use the date in our reminder. The amount is on the voucher that came with your return. This page shows how to pay the IRS online.
Open IRS Direct Paywww.irs.gov/payments/pay-personal-taxes-from-your-bank-account
Ways to pay
IRS Direct Pay. Pay from your checking or savings account. It is free. You do not need to sign in. This is the simplest way for most people.
IRS online account. Pay and also see your payment history. You must set up an account first.
Debit or credit card. The card companies charge a fee.
Check or money order by mail. Use the voucher named in our reminder from your Form 1040-ES package.
Other options are listed at irs.gov/payments.
Steps for IRS Direct Pay
Open the IRS Direct Pay page for personal taxes (use the link on this page). Check that the web address ends in .gov.
Read "Before you start." If you never filed a federal return, or it has been over 6 years, do not use Direct Pay. Contact us instead.
Under "Pay personal taxes," select Make a payment.
For the reason for payment, choose Estimated tax.
For "Apply payment to," choose 1040-ES.
For the tax year, choose the year on our reminder. In January you may also see the new year. Do not choose it unless it matches the reminder.
Verify who you are. You will be asked for your name, address, filing status and Social Security number, as they appear on a past tax return. Use your most recent return. The tax year on this screen is for that old return, not for your payment. If you filed a joint return, enter the spouse whose name is listed first.
Enter your payment information: the routing number and account number for a checking or savings account at a U.S. bank, and the payment date you want.
Review, sign, and submit.
Save your confirmation number. Write it down or take a screenshot. Choose the email confirmation option if it is offered. Direct Pay cannot show the number again after you leave.
Check that the money moved. The confirmation number only shows the IRS accepted your request. Look at your bank statement, or your IRS online account, at least 2 business days later. If it still says "Pending," check again 3 business days after that.
Due date and late payments
Use the due date in our reminder. If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the next business day counts.
If you mail a check, the postmark date counts as the payment date. The IRS says the postmark is the date the mail is processed, which may differ from the day you drop it off.
If you pay late or pay too little, the IRS can charge a penalty for each day the payment is late. It can apply even if you are due a refund.
Mistakes that cause phone calls
Wrong tax year. Choose the tax year on our reminder. In January that is the year that just ended.
Wrong reason. Choose "Estimated tax," not "Balance due" or "Extension."
Wrong agency. Your federal and state amounts are different. Pay each one on its own official site.
Wrong spouse on a joint return. Use the spouse listed first on the return.
Wrong mailing address. Use the address printed for your state in the Form 1040-ES instructions, not the address from the Form 1040 instructions. Mail the voucher only if you pay by check.
Paying twice. If you scheduled an online payment, do not also mail a check.
Already paid, or the amount looks wrong?
Please do not call the IRS and do not change the amount yourself. Contact us first at tax@fortress-accounting.com or 203-275-8860. We will check it and tell you what to do.
Stay safe from scams
We will only send you to the official IRS website. Never pay from a link in a text, email or call from anyone else, even if it looks like the IRS. The IRS does not normally contact people by email.
